Task 1

INSTRUCTIONS

The theme is 'Cultural Sensitivity in Design'. Study a cultural phenomenon, or a particular subculture that is perceived as 'sensitive'. Convey this cultural aspect without altering the actual facts. Produce some preliminary ideas on how to visually express your interpretation in design language. Each idea is to be supported by a short rationale.

Task 1

For this task I designed the poster with a design that can be culturally sensitive. We decided to explore the topic of traditional music. This lead us to find out how traditional music and instruments can be incorporated with modern music genres. Some might believe it is insensitive, but we believe with the right approach, we can turn it into something inclusive and preserving. I did the visual concept 3 on the slides.

Ideation

I really thought the gamelan deserves a lot more recognition around the world. Fans of EDM may be intrigued by the collaboration of traditional elements, while enthusiasts of traditional Indonesian music might appreciate its modern interpretation. Additionally, individuals interested in cultural exchange and artistic experimentation may find this music genre interesting.

Sketches

fig 1 Sketch

I did a sketch to show my idea to the group by showing my visual on the concept. My idea is to have a diptych poster with the left side as the modern music DJ and crowd while the right side the same guy is also playing gamelan for the crowd. The idea is to have a collaboration from both "world". I put "EMBRACE THE CULTUTRE" below as the title of the poster for the new genre of music to embrace both culture of modern and traditional the music and the instruments.

The idea is from:

SUBMISSION

REFLECTION

One of the considerations throughout the design process was ensuring that our approach was full and save. We believe in potential criticisms regarding cultural appropriation or insensitivity. However, we strongly believed that with the right approach. Although, a first I was so confused by this topic I learned a lot about what is culture sensitivity during this task.
