Task 3
Research
fig 1(11/06/2023)
Like the letters "t" and "i," some letters have distinct heights that do not follow the standard ascender or descender height. The letter has a different size from others but still manages to be consistent because it begins at the baseline and ends between the median and ascender in height.

Font Design
Ideation
We should write 'AOTMX' with 5 tools in 5 different ways for each tool. Then Mr. Vinod gave us 10 letters to make a new type faces. The letters are" aetkgrimpn". We can do either UPPERCASE or lowercase letters.

The tools that I have selected are:
  • Fine point Sharpie
  • Round tip(Starbucks' marker)
  • 0.5 Ballpoint pen
  • Artline Calligraphy Pen 3.0mm
  • Highlighter

5 font design that I made using 5 different tools that I did after a couple try.
(fine point, 3.0 calligraphy, 0.5 point pen, round tip, highlighter)

I choose the third design(The middle in this image) It was made with a 0.5 point pen. I like this because it is from a simple casual tool that I usually use but with a different style of writing. I wanted it to be thicker at first but, when I try it with another tool it looks weird and a bit too big.

Digitalization
fig 3
(11/06/23)
Then I digitalize the font in AI, I was in a rush due to few personal problems that took me a couple weeks off. I have to catch up a few things.
fig 3.1(12/06/23)
I put it on fontlab and did a few adjustment to the digitalized letters.

Poster
We were asked to make a poster with our own type face with just "aetkgrimpn" the letters that Mr. Vinod provide to make the typeface.

First attempt on the poster, still with the skinny font that I sorta don't like the font.

I make a few additional attempts with the thicker font, which I then edit several times because I sometimes make mistakes when trying to

FEEDBACK

Week 9: (Absent with permission)

Week 10:(Absent with permission)

Week 11:

General Feedback: We all must look into every single video on the Youtube playlist Mr. Vinod gave us.

Specific Feedback: Because I use all lowercase letters the g should not l be uppercase G.

Week 12:

General Feedback: All the letters must be in use in the poster. The poster should have impact like a poster should.

Specific Feedback: Letters are too thin, make it thicker so it look stronger and characteristic

REFLECTION

Experience: The creation of Typography Task 3 took the longest, and compared to earlier assignments, the workload was the most demanding. Throughout the job, there were numerous details that needed to be taken into account, which presented numerous difficulties. However, this was the most fascinating task because it required us to create a font from scratch, from conducting the necessary research to exporting a downloadable font. It was wonderful to see my handwriting transformed into a typeable digital font; hence, all the effort was worthwhile because the result was so rewarding. I'm grateful for the excellent experience I've gotten as a result of this task.

Observations: The letterforms of a typeface may appear to have the same height or volume, but this is actually a geometric illusion that allows uniformity throughout the letterforms.

Findings: The basics of good typeface design have become much clearer to me as a result of this work. A single letter demands a lot of technical considerations during design, including x-height, ascender and descender heights, size consistency, stroke width, and many more. The process of creating kernels between individual letterforms is especially significant because it has a significant impact on the font's readability and clarity. I've also learned the rules governing punctuation design.

fig 6.1 "The Ultimate Guide to Kerning: How to Kern Font in Your Projects" by Oleg Shcherba
(26/06/2023)

I read an article about how to kern, and this article actually help understand the basics and the use of kerning in design and helping a simple mistake that may cause misunderstanding.

fig 6.2 mistakes example
(26/06/2023)
The article shows a lot of examples but I like this simple example. The logo are too close to the text, also the "E" and "R" are not supposed to be that far if the word supposed to be "Therapist" and not "The Rapist".

In conclusion, the control of white (negative) space in typography is intimately tied to graphic communication in terms of typeface design. This is just as significant as the positive (black) space.
